The New York Times best seller list has two picture books, number two and three, by Drew Daywalt, from his series on crayons for children ages 3-7. Number two is “The Day the Crayons Came Home,” about “a reunion of wayward colors.” Number three is “The Day the Crayons Quit.”
On Amazon, “The Day the Crayons Quit” is a number one best seller.
I love their description of the book:
“Crayons have feelings, too, in this funny back-to-school story illustrated by the creator of Stuck and This Moose Belongs to Me–now a #1 New York Times bestseller! Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Beige Crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown Crayon. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. Blue needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking-each believes he is the true color of the sun.”
“What can Duncan possibly do to appease all of the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best? Kids will be imagining their own humorous conversations with crayons and coloring a blue streak after sharing laughs with Drew Daywalt and New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers.”
“The Day the Crayons Came Home” is one of Parents Magazines’ top ten children’s books for 2015. Buy at Amazon.
With our grandchildren coloring mostly on their iPads, this Grandma always wants to buy new crayons and blank sketching paper for them, concerned about lost creativity. Of course, I buy the largest boxes of crayons I can find. Do not be mislead by the Crayola carrying box of 200 crayons though, as it is not 200 different colors, but two sets of 100 colors. Instead, go for the box of 152 different Crayola crayons.
This is for ages three and up.
There are great choices for toddlers, ages 12 months and up, washable, large in size, and provide the proper grip, in the shape of animals.
They can graduate to jumbo size Crayola crayons.
Star Wars anything is very 2015. Oppenheimer Awards at www.toyportfolio.com, a go to guide for the best toys, books and videos, recommends two Crayola Star Wars items for grandchildren over age 3:
Crayola Star Wars Limited Edition Crayons: “A collector’s item for under ten dollars. Save these for prize stocking stuffers; a set of 64 crayons in a special black and white cardboard box with built-in crayon sharpener and 48 classic colors all wrapped in black and grey labels. There are 16 Star-Wars-themed colors and each includes metallic and glitter hues. Choose from two themes. Darth Vader or Storm Trooper.”
Crayola Star Wars Storm Trooper Collectible Tin: “A long lasting collector’s tin with a Star Wars Stormtrooper graphic with a box of crayons with a sharpener inside. Save this for a prize winning gift to your Star Wars fan; they’ll love the collectible tin and the set of 64 crayons in 48 classic colors wrapped in black and grey labels. There are eight Star-Wars-themed colors and each includes metallic and glitter hues. Choose this or the Darth Vader tin.”
Remember to add drawing pads, plain.
With animals too.
Now, being grandma, we want grandchildren to have the most fun. A messy but adorable crayon gift is an Oppenheimer toy award winner from www.toyportfolio.com, The Body Crayon Book,” described as
“We had great fun experimenting with the many funny ideas for making “body art” with six nontoxic body crayons. Our 7-year-old tester likes drawing jewelry and messages. A good gift for campers or for a sleep-over/party game. They say 4, but we’d say more like 6 and up. “ This is an inexpensive gift available at Amazon.
I can see why Oppenheimer toy awards might recommend this crayon book for a time children are not with their parents or a special occasion. However, what are grandmas for but to buy drums and things for the grandchildren that the parents might not! With the holidays coming up, think creativity and fun with crayons with
Joy,
Mema
