This Five Star Chocolate Dump Cake Wins The Best Dump Cake Award

More than anything else, this Grandma loves chocolate of any kind, dark, milk white, and anything made with chocolate.

This Grandma loves dump cake recipes, especially those made with chocolate. I think the “dump” definitely means easy. To bake with grandchildren, easy is the best. Look at this previous post,  the first chocolate dump cake recipe I discovered. “We do Not Have to Wait Until National Chocolate Pudding Day to Enjoy Chocolate Pudding Dump Cake With Grandchildren.”

Few ingredients, easy and good.

The next dump cake recipe, made with fruit, which I have been making for almost half a century, is “Dump Cake Delicious.”

When I started sharing recipes I wanted to preserve for the grandchildren, I offered tips on how to bake with grandchildren and not have a mess and how to split up the chores between grandchildren.

Preparation is the key. Remember we can make recipes multipart activities by taking the grandchildren to the supermarket shopping first for the ingredients, then preparing for the cooking, then cooking (reading and measuring shared), and then decorating and eating, and finally clean up. Older grandchildren take the heavier chores and the younger grandchildren learn to measure and pour. Remember to cover the kitchen floors and counters with old towels before you start cooking or baking with grandchildren. Makes cleanup so much easier and children love helping to clean up with grandma, who makes everything a game or contest. Grandchildren will spend more time washing bowls in the sink than cooking!

So when I saw an Instagram, June 15, 2023, about the best chocolate dump cake, I saw it had solid five star ratings, so must preserve the recipe and share. Yes, I have made my grandchildren chocoholics.

This chocolate dump cake recipe is a dump cake recipe because you dump all the ingredients for the cake in one pot, mix them all in a pot over medium heat, but does require two more bowls—separate for wet and dry ingredients. Then the batter is dumped into a cake pan to bake. For the icing, you melt Nestlé’s semisweet-chocolate chips and swirl them together with sour cream.

Makes 10 servings

INGREDIENTS

2 cups sugar

4 ounces unsweetened chocolate

1 stick unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the pan

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting the pan

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk

1 teaspoon cider vinegar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1½ cups Nestle’s semisweet-chocolate or milk chocolate chips

1½ cups sour cream, at room temperature

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and place a baking sheet on the lowest rack to catch any drips as the cake bakes on the middle rack.

2. In a 3-quart pot, mix the sugar, unsweetened chocolate, butter and 1 cup of water together. Place the pot over medium heat and stir occasionally until all of the ingredients are melted and blended. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.

3. In a bowl, sift together the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

4. In a separate bowl, mix together the wet ingredients: stir together the milk and vinegar.

5. Grease a 9-inch tube pan with the butter very well to get into the crevices of the cake pan. I have the grandchildren use an entire stick of butter to hold with a paper tower holder at the end that has been slightly softened in the microwave. Then sprinkle the flour over the butter, again into all the crevices of the cake pan. This is a moist cake, so it really needs a well-prepared pan to keep it from sticking.

6. When the chocolate in the pot has cooled a bit, whisk in the milk mixture and 2 eggs. Then, slowly add the dry ingredients, In several additions, and without overmixing while you whisk. When the mixture is smooth, add the vanilla and whisk once or twice to blend.

7. Pour the batter into the tube pan and bake on the middle rack until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 30 to 35 minutes.

8. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and cool on a rack. Grandma should do this with an older grandchild as this can be tricky as the cake is moist. Let cool completely.

9. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler, or the microwave following microwave instructions, then let cool to room temperature.

10. Stir in the sour cream, ¼ cup at a time, until the mixture is smooth.

11. When the cake is cool, you may frost it as is or cut it in half so that you have 2 layers.

There will be extra icing whether you have 1 or 2 layers. More for the grandchildren to savor with their fingers!

With younger grandchildren, try the chocolate pudding dump cake first.  Few ingredients. It is good.  If they like fruit, or for holidays, definitely try the fruit dump cake.  With older grandchildren or for yourselves, try this five star best chocolate dump cake.  Enjoy!

Joy,

Mema
