Chocolate and Peanut Butter Mini Dessert Sandwiches From a Famous Chef Add to Grandma’s Collection of Decedent Unhealthy But Delicious Treats With Which To Spoil Grandchildren

This Grandma always looks for decedent unhealthy but delicious treats with which to spoil grandchildren. Who would have thought I would find something outrageously tempting in a recipe in People Magazine. Trying to find the recipe on line without purchasing Jacques Pepin’s cookbook, “Jacques Pepin Heart & Soul in the Kitchen,” is impossible. He calls it Chocolate and Peanut Butter Croque Bebes. That might scare off the average grandchild. Chocolate and Peanut Butter mini dessert sandwich is what it is and what we grandmas should call it.

It has the best ingredients, favorites of our grandchildren: ½ cup of semisweet chocolate morsels, 8 slices of thin white bread, 6 tablespoons of peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of unsalted softened butter, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. There is little of redeeming quality here except the peanut butter. In the picture in People Magazine, Jacques Pepin has the crusts on the bread. That is evil. He must not be a grandfather. We know we must take the crusts off the bread.

The recipe is a breeze, and one we can easily make with our grandchildren. Expect that the entire bag of semisweet chocolate morsels will be eaten, more will be added to the recipe than it calls for, and the floor must be protected with old towels for easy cleanup, as if a grandchild would allow a chocolate morsel to go to waste. If the grandchildren like milk chocolate morsels better, use them. Use the grandchild’s favorite peanut butter. Remember to divide up tasks, and it is easy with such an easy recipe.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Melt the chocolate morsels in the microwave according to the package. Spread 4 slices of bread with melted chocolate and 4 slices of bread with peanut butter. The printed recipe says to “evenly” spread these. Really. Again, Mr. Pepin is not child friendly although his recipe is a child’s dream.

Sandwich the slices together, one side chocolate and the other side peanut butter. Butter the outside of the bread. This Grandma does that with grilled cheese, done in a pan, not oven; however, maybe doing grilled cheese in the oven will work too. See post.

Prepare a lightly greased baking sheet. Put the sandwiches on the baking sheet. Sprinkle both sides of the sandwiches with sugar (add more, of course, or your grandchildren will anyway). Bake for about ten minutes, turning once after 5 minutes so both sides brown. Let cool for five minutes. Cut each sandwich into 4 small triangles or squares or use some of grandma’s favorite sandwich cutters that cut into fun shapes and holiday shapes. See post.

Serve warm, according to the recipe. This Grandma says serve warm with the grandchild’s favorite ice cream! It is always important to make a decedent unhealthy but delicious treat even more decedent and delicious to properly spoil grandchildren with

Joy,

Mema
