Our grandchildren love raw cookie dough. It was so difficult when we first had the raw egg scare and then the uncooked flour scare. See previous 2017 post, “Safely Making Homemade Cookie Dough and Adding It to Safe Homemade Ice Cream.”
That previous post included a recipe for homemade cookie dough and then adding it to ice cream. We are still at the point in time where we have to worry about raw eggs and uncooked four. The new fabulous recipe I found for Cookie Dough Bowls starts with a warning about flour and recommends still heat treating flour and leaves out eggs completely!
The recipe on line includes a video instruction. I like to watch those with the younger grandchildren before I cook or bake with them. The recipe is perfect to make with any age grandchildren as it takes only twenty minutes preparation. You can substitute some of the ingredients with organic versions, and organic whole wheat flour for white flour. The hardest part for the grandchildren is the four hour freezing time for the cookie dough to freeze around the muffin tin to create the edible cookie dough ice cream bowl.
INGREDIENTS
1 c. butter, melted
1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. granulated sugar
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. whole milk
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1 1/2 c. mini chocolate chips
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, beat melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and pale. Stir in flour, milk, vanilla, and salt and stir until combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
Invert a 12-cup muffin pan and cover the bottom with plastic wrap.
Press about 1/4 cup of cookie dough around each inverted muffin pan cup to create a bowl. (Depending on how thick you make each bowl, you may only have enough dough for 9 or 10 cups.)
Place the whole pan in the freezer and freeze until solid, about 4 hours.
Then I went to the supermarket to get the ingredients in preparation for their visit. In the refrigerator section of the store, I noticed a new container, Nestle Toll House Edible Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough! It is made with wheat flour, has no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors and is made with real chocolate and real butter. It does not contain eggs. The on line ratings are great.
Fortunately, I bought several containers as the grandchildren grabbed spoons as soon as I showed them the edible cookie dough containers. I must admit that I grabbed a spoon along with them. Yes, it is fabulous and can blow any grandparent’s diet in a flash.
The grandchildren were not interested in making the cookie dough recipe from scratch when we had delicious cookie dough already made. It makes the idea of freezing chocolate chip cookie dough into edible ice cream bowls a breeze, and the four hour wait is non-existent when you have a spoon and a tub of edible cookie dough to nibble on while you wait.
The only concern you are left with is choice of ice cream and toppings. The recipe suggests just vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, but we grandparents are much more creative than that. Or, at least our wonderful grandchildren can be very creative with their choices of ice cream and toppings with
Joy,
Mema
