Fruity Pebbles French Toast and Other Favorite Cereal Coated Foods Grandchildren Will Love to Make and Eat

French toast is a treat the grandchildren ask for immediately when this Grandma visits.  Who else would make it for them on a school day morning?  I always serve it with syrup and cinnamon sugar and was surprised I never thought of coating it with one of their favorite cereals.  Cookbook author Jocelyn Delk Adams of Grandbaby Cakes appeared on the Today Show March 6, 2017 and introduced Fruity Pebbles French Toast and Corn Flakes Coated Fish Sticks.  See the video segment:


What interested this Grandma was that we grandmas could crush their favorite cereal and make fancy and sweet french toast.  Here is the recipe with annotations by Grandma:


Ingredients:

2 large eggs

1/2 cup half-and-half (I would use milk)

2 teaspoons granulated sugar (I would leave out the extra sugar)

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (only if grandchild likes cinnamon)

2/3 cup crushed Fruity Pebbles, or similar cereal

4 slices challah bread (or whole wheat or whatever is at the grandchild’s home)

3 tablespoons butter


Preparation:

  1. In a medium sized bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, sugar and cinnamon until well combined.

  2. On a plate, spread Fruity Pebbles out evenly.

  3. Add butter to a skillet and melt over medium high heat.

  4. For assembly, simply dip each bread slice in egg mixture, allowing it to absorb for about 20-30 seconds, and then into the cereal, thoroughly coating the bread. After coating, place each slice of bread in the warm skillet and brown until golden on both sides. Serve immediately.


If we make it with grandchildren, we must remember to allow them to crush the cereal, and before we do, cover our floors and counters with old towels for easy clean up.  They love making their own French Toast, but save that for weekend mornings.


Why not use Jocelyn Delk Adams’s technique for fish for chicken fingers, even the sweet kind of cereal, and for cookie toppings and more?  After all, savory and sweet is in vogue for meats, fish and everything.  We grandmas can be creative and heroes to our children. 


Where I see this going is what happened with this Grandma’s tip of dessert first and the parents of the grandchildren trying to steal the idea when they saw how the grandchildren eat all their food after having five Dibs before dinner – dessert first!  See post: Pizza for Breakfast and Dessert First.
