This is a big deal for every grandparent. In 2013 and 2014, Frozen, the Disney movie, was amazing for all of our grandchildren and for us grandparents. “Frozen” grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office in its original theatrical release. The film won two Oscars including Best Animated Feature.
Disney has announced it is doing a Broadway musical adaption of the animated movie, “Frozen” and is targeting a Broadway opening in spring 2018, following an out-of-town tryout in the summer of 2017. We are told they have not selected the city for the out-of-town tryout.
This Grandma first tried to find out where the out-of-town tryout might be in the summer of 2017. After all, we grandmas can plan a summer vacation to whatever city and share what is sure to be another Disney hit with our grandchildren, before everyone else does. So, I looked for cities that previously hosted out-of-town tryouts. This Grandma and Grandpa went to college in Boston, and I went to look at Boston first, but found out that Boston, Philadelphia and New Haven were popular in the the ’50s and early ’60s. Yes, the 60’s, when we saw all the musical tryouts there. Boston is a great city to visit with grandchildren. See blog post on taking grandchildren to Boston:
Then, this Grandma looked to cities where other Disney musicals had out of town tryouts. Ww should watch for these cities to be in the running again. Lion King premiered in Minneapolis in July 1997, with one out of town try out. “The Little Mermaid” premiered in Denver in 2007. “Aladdin” premiered in Seattle in 2011.
Because the producers/backers know that since a lot of money is going into the production, they have try-outs to learn what needs to be worked on and a period of time away from the high expectations of demanding critics in New York. But, an out of town tryout can add millions to an already high budget, so some Disney musicals did not have an out of town tryout and maybe Frozen will skip out of town, especially, as I have said below, Idina Menzel is considered for the lead, making it a sure fire hit immediately. Tarzan, debuted on Broadway in May, 2006, without an out-of-town tryout. Cinderella skipped an out-of-town tryout and opened on Broadway in March of 2013.
Mary Poppins opened on Broadway in November, 2006, following a world premiere in London in September 2004. Should we plan a trip to London with our grandchildren? We do not have to wait for Frozen. This Grandma has done a post on a London itinerary too!
We grandmas must pay attention to the possibilities. After all, Frozen, the Musical, IS going to be a hit. Now, will Disney target Idina Menzel, the experienced, successful, and award winning Broadway musical star to reprise her part in the movie? Queen Elsa herself personally confirmed that Frozen, the Musical, was in the works back in December 2014! She has also given us something else to watch out for. Idina Menzel said that a feature film sequel to the Disney hit movie Frozen is also currently being developed.
In 2014, Idina Menzel also said she is interested in being in Frozen, the Musical, on Broadway. We can only hope!
In the meantime, we can introduce the ideas of a movie sequel and a Broadway musical to our grandchildren. Why not introduce them to the other Disney musicals and take them to Broadway now. You guessed it! Grandma has a post about taking the grandchildren to New York City.
And, of course, we can buy them “Frozen,” to watch with them at home.
And all kinds of Frozen costumes and accessories are available from Disney while we wait.
We grandmas must just watch and wait and plan to follow Frozen. The hardest part is going to be the wait!
Joy,
Mema
