The news about the Zika virus passed by mosquitos is all over the news. The news about the children in Flint, Michigan being exposed to lead is all over the news. Unfortunately, the news media is making all of us grandmas concerned about everything in our environment and society that can hurt our grandchildren. Where can we get advice we can trust?
In research on the web about these two issues, I came across a website by the American Academy of Pediatrics that has information that children under age six are most at risk for lead poisoning and how to make your home more lead safe. Then, I noticed how wonderful the website is for parents and grandparents alike. It has immunization schedules at your fingertips. It has a symptom checker. It has apps for families. By age, baby, toddler, preschool, grade school, teen, and young adult, it has subcategories for information important to parents and grandparents that answer our most pressing developmental and health questions. Sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics, it gives this Grandma confidence in the advice on the website. I know the website covered the lead issue and what we need to know, but I wanted to see the coverage on the Zika virus. The web article, “Zika Virus: CDC Issues Travel Warning for Pregnant Women,” was the most straightforward and easiest article to follow, telling us it is a Level 2 Travel alert, and specifically listing the countries, how Zika is spread, precations, Zika symptoms, treatment, and links to the CDC and additional information. Check out healthychildren.org. Save it in your favorites and share it with the parents of your grandchildren.
On a lighter note, literally, January 22, 2016, Joy Bauer appeared on the Today Show at the request of Matt Lauer to share his favorite chicken tender recipe which she gave him. The chicken tenders are baked instead of fried, so much lighter in calories and much healthier for our grandchildren. Most important, it is so easy. Take raw chicken tenders and dump them into whisked egg. Cover with whole grain bread crumbs mixed with parmesan cheese, season to taste using salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Put the tenders on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Wonderful! Perfect for us adults too.
Let’s concentrate on healthy grandchildren in 2016 and when we need information that is clear, distinct, and helpful, go to the American Academy of Pediatrics at healthychildren.org. When we grandmas decide not to make reservations but to cook for our grandchildren, chicken tenders are a sure hit, and if we can make them healthier it is so much
