This Grandma was not going to touch this new dictionary word “selfie”—yes, it has been added to the dictionary—no way, no how. However, everywhere, including the Oscars, we are inundated with the selfie craze. The selfie, including many movie stars, taken by Ellen DeGeneres at the Oscars has been resent (re-tweeted for those of you who understand tweeting) by two million people and counting. It even closed down Twitter for a while, not that this Grandma would notice. For those of you who live under a rock, a selfie is a picture one takes of oneself and sends it along.
We criticize those who are self absorbed but do not criticize those who take selfies and now send them along to those of us with emails, texts, etc. It seems that the phone companies love selfies. Samsung (Ellen DeGeneres used a Samsung phone for her viral selfie), it seems, is a major Oscar night advertiser who got the best product placement ever with this star studded selfie.
NBC has started a morning series called, “Love your Selfie,” as if we have to be worried about the public sending pictures of themselves to get on television for even ten seconds!
Bah! Humbug!
Until. . . .
This Grandma ended up with an unknown rash on my face. I was concerned I had some contagious disease so did not want to infect others unnecessarily. Yes, you guessed it. I took a selfie (after a try or two) and sent it off to the doctor. The doctor was able to diagnose the rash from the selfie! The doctor prescribed medication and did it all from the selfie and a telephone call. Modern science now has a web doctor site someone I know used. They requested a selfie from her, too. Okay, selfies may make our lives easier.
Most importantly. . . .
On this Grandma’s last visit to grandchildren, our oldest grandson looked at my I pad and lamented it had a plain black background. Before I could say, ‘selfie,” he had taken a selfie and put it as wallpaper on the I Pad. Now, I get to see his smiling face every time I open my I pad.
Love your Selfie! Okay, this Grandma must get with the times too.
Joy,
Mema
