This Grandma loves when the Today Show and other news media advertise the Baby Center winners of most popular baby names of the year. Their data comes from nearly a half a million parents who shared their baby’s name with Baby Center in 2014. This year, I read so much more than just the top 10 list and was so surprised at what I found.

Each of us has to have at least one grandchild with one of the top names as they have been around for a while. Sophia is on top again for girls for the fifth year and Jackson is on top again for the second year in a row. Emma and Olivia are in the top three for the third year in a row, but it seems as though these three names have been going strong for the last decade. Jacob was on top for so many years and now has dropped down to number 10. Jack is no longer in the top 10.
This Grandma knows that there are parents who want their baby’s name to be one of the most popular and those who do not, each for good reason. What was so surprising this year for me was clicking on the name to see its popularity over time, common sibling names, and more. When you do so, there is more information, but if you click on “related” the true fun starts. Here the website provides options for names that sound like or are similar to the name.
Here the website provides “common sibling names.”
This is where the information highway becomes spooky for this Grandma. Testing it out with our own grandchildren, this Grandma found that the option name for the sibling held true as a top choice! Going through sibling pairs of grandma friends led to the same result. How could this be!
No matter how our children or we think we are original, not only are we not original with the name of the child, we seem to run in patterns of sibling names as well! I hope next year Baby Center does some research as to why.
Enjoy your exploration of Baby Center. Test out sibling information with your grandchildren’s names. They do give the top 100 for each sex!
Joy,
Mema
