No Bake Thanksgiving Turkey Cookies and Place Cards to Make With Grandchildren

For Thanksgivings past, the preschool grandchildren came home with Thanksgiving decorations that I have kept and still adorn our Thanksgiving table.  Years past, I did arts and crafts and made leaf place cards or let the young grandchildren make place cards of their own creativity.  As much as I could for holidays, I tried to cook or bake something with the grandchildren.  This year I came across Thanksgiving Turkey Cookies that do double duty as place cards and dessert!

The recipe resembles a rice crispy treat recipe but gets more creative.  Remember this grandma’s rules for cooking or baking with grandchildren.  The recipe must be easy and appealing to the grandchildren.  Think candy and sweets. This recipe complies!  Remember to cover all the counters and floors with old towels for easy cleanup.  And buy extra marshmallows and candy for eating while making.  You can make the turkeys for dessert or have them do double duty as place cards, which follows this Grandma’s rule of dessert first

No Bake Thanksgiving Turkey Cookies

Ingredients

2 separate saucepans of 1/4 cup butter each, cubed, and melted

4 cups miniature marshmallows

6 cups crisp rice cereal

28 chocolate cream filled sandwich cookies or white cream filled sandwich cookies

11/2-2 cups chocolate frosting

1 package (11 ounces) candy corn

28 malted milk balls

White candy coating, optional

Directions

  1. Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large saucepan. Add the marshmallows and stir over low heat until melted.

  2. Stir in the cereal and cool for ten minutes.

  3. Spread parchment paper in large pan. Melt second 1/4 cup butter and allow to cool. With buttered hands form the cereal into about 28 1 ½ inch balls and place in pan leaving space between balls.

  4. Allow the grandchildren to twist apart the 28 sandwich cookies. Leave or remove filling as you spread the chocolate frosting over each cookie half to be “glue” to hold on the candy corn and attach the candy corn tails to the cereal balls.

  5. Place 28 cookie halves under 28 cereal balls to form the base for each turkey. Place 5 pieces of candy corn in a fan pattern on remaining cookie halves; press each half onto back of cereal ball to form the tail. Attach remaining candy corn with frosting onto cereal ball to form turkey wings.

  6. For head, attach malted milk ball with frosting; cut white tip off additional candy and attach to head with frosting to form beak. If desired, place melted white candy coating in a piping bag fitted with a #1 round tip; pipe onto head to form eyes. Allow to stand until frosting has set. Store, tightly covered at room temperature.

  7. If adding small place cards to the front of the turkeys, add more chocolate frosting as “glue” to hold the place cards on the candy corn wings.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Joy,

Mema
