Stephen Fred Goldenberg AKA PopPop Obituary

For our children and grandchildren, PopPop’s obituary was published in the Sun Sentinel, Sunday, March 11, 2023. It will always be on the website www.legacy.com.

Born in the Bronx to Dr. Harold and Mrs. Lenore Goldenberg on September 8, 1946, as the oldest grandchild in the family, Stephen Goldenberg enjoyed the dream American childhood. He grew up surrounded by a large and close family, especially his Grandpa Ben who was a strong influence on his life.

Stephen attended Jericho High School, Boston University, Brooklyn Law School, and the University of Miami Master’s Program in Taxation, where he made lifelong friends. He was a fifty-year member of the Florida Bar and was listed in The Best Lawyers in America. Stephen held many leadership positions in the legal community, including President of North

Broward / South Broward Estate Planning Council.

Stephen met his wife, Renee, briefly while attending Boston University. Upon each deciding Florida was their perfect home, they found each other again. They raised three children, Jason (Celina), Rachel (Ben), and Rebecca (James), and shared the joy of six grandchildren, Josh, Emily, Noah, Eli, Ben, and Micah. Partners in life and in the law, for over four decades together, Renee and Stephen completed their bucket list of seeing all the Wonders of the World, enjoyed time with family and friends, and contributed to the betterment of their community.

Stephen incorporated the Broward County C.H.A.R.L.E.E. Family Care Homes, Inc., a nonprofit organization to provide therapeutic, residential, and supportive services to abused, abandoned and neglected children, served on the Board of Directors, and as President. Stephen served in the City of Plantation as Chair of the Code Enforcement Board and in the City of Fort Lauderdale as Chair of the Nuisance Abatement Board, as President of Leadership Broward, as Chair of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Coalition, and as member of the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Council. He served as the first president of our condominium board, establishing amenities and promoting procedures that continue to enhance the life of the residents.

Stephen is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, sister, Caryn Goldenberg Carvo (Michael), brother-in-law, Harvey Mattel, and many close and extended family members.

His medical care was expertly overseen by his cousin, Dr. Howard Sonderling, from when he first received his diagnosis. The pancreatic cancer treatment from Dr. Eileen O’Reilly and her team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York gave him an unexpected, and much appreciated, five extra years of life. Local oncological treatment by Dr. Peter Hosein and his team at Sylvester Cancer Center in Miami enhanced his quality of life.

The funeral and shiva are private. In lieu of flowers, so that others may benefit from the same quality of care that Stephen received, donations may be made in Stephen’s memory to either support pancreatic cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, designating that 100% of contributions shall go to MSK in support of Dr. O’Reilly’s cancer research at this link, or to support Dr. Peter Hosein’s ongoing laboratory research and clinical trials in pancreatic cancer at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami at this link.

He will be missed by all he touched.

With little joy,

Mema
