This Grandma realized several years ago that greeting cards and stamps for mailing are getting so expensive that it is not much more to send something more than a card for holidays, including Valentine’s Day. I wrote a previous post about this in 2017 with ideas other than greeting cards. “When Valentine’s Day Gifts Are Cheaper Than Valentine’s Day Greeting Cards, This Grandma Knows What To Do.”
In 2016, I wrote a post on how to get the best deals. “When Candy and Gifts May Cost Less Than Greeting Cards, Getting the Best Bargains for Grandchildren For Valentine’s Day and Such Holidays Means Signing Up On Line.”
This year, as the years get longer (we never say older), I remembered that my Mother, GG ( Great Grandmother) Frieda used to make her famous family recipe for butter cookies for holidays and changed what she put in the thumb print based on the holiday. For Valentine’s Day, she would put maraschino cherry pieces in the center of each cookie. To preserve GG Frieda’s recipe for the grandchildren on this blog, I searched high and low for the recipe.
Since I have not made it in decades, I could not find the recipe. I emailed both daughters in hopes that one would have it and I could memorialize the recipe in this blog post. My younger daughter had the recipe. It turns out she requested her grandma’s recipe from me in 2013 and forwarded me the email I sent to her years ago!
Grandma’s recipe for butter cookies
1/2 lb. butter softened
2/3 c. sugar
2 egg yolks
2 c. flour
1 t. vanilla
1 t. baking soda
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolks, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour into the sugar mixture. Cover dough, and chill for at least one hour. Chill cookie sheets.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F . Press dough out onto ungreased, chilled cookie sheets. (can add chocolate chip in center).
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly golden at the edges. Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.
The recipe is simple and makes delicious cookies. You can add sprinkles or even Valentine’s Day heart candy in the center for this holiday and be creative with the center for other holidays.
This year, being a long distance grandmother, and remembering GG’s cookies, I decided to send cookies for Valentine’s Day. A one pound cookie tin of fabulous David’s Cookies cost the same as three Valentine’s Day cards for my three younger grandsons. As always, if you read my previous posts, the closer to Valentine’s Day, the less expensive the holiday items. This year, you can get 15% off site wide on David’s Cookies with the code HEYCUPID at this link .
It is a bit cheaper to send the cookies in their regular red box than a special Valentine’s Day box and the cookies are still the same delicious and wonderful cookies. If you order by February 12, 2020 at 10 am, Wednesday, they will arrive by Valentine’s Day. However, how many times do our greeting cards arrive a day or two after the holiday! Wait a day or two after the holiday, and you will find you can get as much as 50% off.
Of course, our grandchildren ate all the cookies immediately upon arrival.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Joy,
Mema
