Visit a Local Farm With Grandchildren

When we were on our last visit with the younger grandchildren, we were contemplating what to do for a special outing. We and they had recently done the local children’s museums. There was no good children’s movie that the grandchildren had not seen. Not that that has stopped us in the past from using our grandchildren to see a children’s movie we wanted to see that they had seen before. But, at that visit, the weather was beautiful and we were thinking of an outside activity.

Then, it came to this Grandma. I searched for a local farm and found one about forty five minutes away. Fortunately, the family mini van has a movie screen upon which we could have the grandchildren watch Disney Planes going and have them nap returning.

Putting “farm with children’s activities” into google, I found Clark’s Farm in the greater Washington D.C. area.

It had so many activities. The children rode on their ponies, who were gentle and the handlers were wonderful with the grandchildren. The handlers were patient with the grandparents too who wanted to keep taking pictures to text to the parents. They had hayrides and cow train rides. They had a petting area where the grandchildren could pet and feed various farm animals. The animals were friendly and gentle even with the smallest children. There was a playground and other activities for the grandchildren. There was even a fall season pumpkin patch so well done that all the pumpkins were beautiful and almost the same size.

This activity was even better than we expected. We also found that the farm has a retail store that sells 100% grass fed beef, pasture raised lamb, chicken, eggs, and pork throughout the year. We know grass fed and finished beef is the best.

So, the next time you are with the grandchildren and are looking for an outdoor activity, go

to google. You might find strawberry picking. You might find what we found, a farm open year round, at least on holiday times. Even if some of the activities are suspended in winter, the educational value of learning about farm raised produce, pasture raised animals, locally grown food with no added hormones or steroids, preserved farmland, sustainable practices on a family farm is a great outing with grandparents.

Mema
